The Sharkey
The “BS” patch wasn’t created in a boardroom — it came from the side of a race car.
This new corduroy cap pays tribute to the “Sharkey Volvo”. A legendary Brass Tag Volvo 122S #72BS-31, campaigned in the early 1970s by New York State Police Captain and Finger Lakes Region SCCA racer Stephen Sharkey. Sharkey transformed the once-humble Volvo sedan into a serious B-Sedan contender, preparing much of the car himself with four-wheel disc brakes, and several P1800 performance upgrades.
A regular at Watkins Glen and Mid-Ohio, the Sharkey Volvo battled through regional SCCA events and Trans-Am races from 1970–1973, earning podium finishes and becoming a familiar sight in the golden era of SCCA B-Sedan, U2L and 2.5 Challenge Trans-Am racing. Drivers Harold Cunningham and Richard Vary also shared seat time in the car during its competitive run.
The hat’s deep red corduroy and simple “BS” felt patch capture the spirit of grassroots racing in the 1960’s and 1970s — when racers towed their own cars, built them in home garages, and drove them flat-out all weekend. Clean, period-correct, and unmistakably B-Sedan.
